President Kagame today received Li Yong the Director-General of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) who is in the country on a two day official visit. The director general accompanied by his delegation will visit the Kigali Special Economic Zone.

UNIDO is the specialised United Nations agency that promotes Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) for the poverty reduction, inclusive globalisation and environmental sustainability in developing countries and economies in transition.

The visit saw the signing of a cooperation agreement between Rwanda and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). The five-year country programme framework is expected to contribute to Rwanda’s development programmes like Vision 2020 and second Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS II).

The first UNIDO consolidated program in Rwanda was initiated in 1997 with the UNIDO Integrated Program for Rwanda. The program concentrated on private sector promotion at three levels of interventions: Recovery of manufacturing capacity through Enterprise rehabilitation and restructuring; Capacity-building to promote micro and small-scale enterprises with particular emphasis on women entrepreneurs; and Capacity-building program pertaining for industrial policy formulation, its Implementation  and monitoring and Evaluation systems.
