Muhanga, 5 March 2015
President Kagame today commissioned the Nyabarongo 1 Hydro power plant, located in Muhanga District, which is to contribute 18% electricity to the national power grid. The commissioning event was also attended by Ministers of Energy of the Northern Corridor countries of Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan.
Addressing more than 2000 residents of Muhanga and Ngororero who gathered to welcome him, President Kagame underscored the importance of electricity in the pursuit of the country’s development aspirations:
“We will do all we can to ensure access to electricity for all homes, schools, hospitals and industries. Our goal is to make sure that every Rwandan wherever they may live benefit from the progress Rwanda is making To increase access to electricity, exploiting natural sources of energy and increasing regional integration will be key. We have made progress but we need to do even more, work together and spare no efforts to achieve our goals.”
President Kagame reminded Rwandans of their responsibility to build on Rwanda’s progress to achieve even more.
