President Kagame today received the United States Special Envoy to the Great Lakes of Africa, Russell Dana “Russ” Feingold who is visiting the region to assess the DR Congo peace process.
After meeting President Kagame, Feingold told press that the discussions touched a lot of things:
“We talked a great deal about the hopes we have about dialogue and the peace process in Eastern Congo, a process led by Angola through the ICGLR, the need to take action against the FDLR and it’s a pleasure that there is an announcement by the Democratic Republic of Congo and MONUSCO that a more serious action is being taken against FDLR militarily. We also had an opportunity to discuss the somber but important 20th Anniversary of what occurred in this country and many of us are honored to be invited to attend on April 7.”
Feingold said he thought there was unlimited future for Rwanda and DRC once outstanding issues are solved. He said that during his visit to camps he was able see how well the camps were run by the Rwandan Government. He said he was able to understand that many Rwandophone refugees in Rwandan camps were interested in going back to Congo but that they were concerned by the security back home, and that with the collaboration between the Rwanda Government and the international community, these issues could be resolved to allow them to go back home.
