President Kagame was the guest of honour at the closing ceremony of the International Leadership Programme – an annual inter-generation forum organized by the UNESCO Chair that brings together young leaders in the field of human rights from all over the world. This 6th Forum, held in Rwanda and co-hosted by Human Rights Commission of Rwanda and the Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut was the first one to be held outside the USA. Over 90 young leaders from 24 countries participated in the forum.
“Rwandans cannot enjoy the respect and dignity they deserve if their rights are not guaranteed. Our recent history has a lot to teach us. Indeed, besides the 1994 genocide, in which countless numbers of innocent people were killed, far too many Rwandans know too well what it means to be deprived of one’s basic fundamental rights, having been victims of human rights abuse for decades.”
